Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,”, is a safe and effective option to help you relax and feel more comfortable during certain dental visits. You will be awake and will be able to hear and respond to conversations around you. Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask that fits over your nose. You will breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes, you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.
